Non-Operative Committee Update

Nigel J. Price, MD and John G. Thometz, MD
Non-Operative Committee Chair and Past Chair

The Non-Operative Committee has worked to emphasize the importance of non-operative management within the treatment protocols of the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) and endeavored to increase patient education by compiling a list of frequently-asked questions (FAQs) with appropriate responses.

The role of Scoliscore™, at this point is an area of common concern and the committee prepared a position paper based on a review of the published data up to this point. Videos on patient experience with bracing and scoliosis support groups are being prepared. Discussions have been undertaken with other committee chairs including those of Advocacy and Public Policy and Patient Education, again to emphasize the importance of non-operative management.

Work is being undertaken to prepare a Half Day Course for the 47th Annual Meeting including updating bracing protocols in both the United States and Europe. Discussions were also undertaken regarding the appropriate role of social media in the education of our patients. Collaborative efforts are underway with the International Society on Scoliosis Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Treatment (SOSORT) membership regarding methodologies for the conservative care of patients with scoliosis.

B. Stephens Richards, III, MD and Nigel J. Price, MD, will be participating in panel discussions at the next SOSORT meeting in Milan, Italy in May of 2012.
