Recientemente una nueva técnica quirúrgica denominada "tóracoplastía de expansión" que consiste en especia de costilla expandible de titanio (VEPTR o "costilla de titanio"), ha sido aprobada por la FDA para el tratamiento de la deformidad torácica combinada (columna y caja torácica) alargando el tórax constreñido y enderezando indirectamente la columna sin fusión espinal. Los resultados a largo plazo con esta técnica aún están en desarrollo.
