The dominant and official language among the citizens of Turkey and Istanbul is Turkish.
Turkey 's national currency is the Turkish Lira and is denoted by TL. The Turkish Lira is divided into 100 KuruĆ, a subunit of the TL . The exchange rate fluctuates but the current exchange rate is 1.75 TL to $1.00.
Istanbul is in the Eastern European Time Zone (EET) which is two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (three hours ahead during Daylight Savings Time).
Istanbul has a Mediterranean climate which is defined by the warm, dry summers and the cool, wet winters. Istanbul has high humidity, especially in the summer months, creating large amount of fog, especially during the morning hours. During the summer months, temperatures range from 65.3 F/ 18.5 C to 83 F/ 28.4 C. Istanbul is warm and humid during the summer but the temperatures rarely rise above 90 F/ 32 C with only an average of five days per year.
The electricity in Istanbul operates on 220 volts, similar to the rest of Europe, compared to 120 volts in the United States .
In Turkey it is customary to tip waiters and hotel staff at a rate of 10 percent and it is encouraged to roundup your taxi fare to the next Turkish Lira.
Most flights arrive at Atatürk International Airport (IST) in Istanbul . The airport is approximately 15 miles outside of the city center and can be reached by light rail, taxi, and bus.
