SRS Member T. Desmond Brown wins Golden Apple Award from Health Volunteers Overseas

Congratulations to SRS Active Fellow T. Desmond Brown, MD for being named one of the recipients of the 2012 Golden Apple Award from Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO) for his commitment to global health.

HVO states that "Since 2005, Dr. Brown has focused his efforts on the Angkor Hospital for Children in Siem Reap, Cambodia, returning each year for extended visits. He initiated a pediatric orthopaedic service and has patiently mentored the surgeons and pediatricians in procedures for a wide variety of orthopaedic pathology, both congenital and acquired. His teaching has had a great impact on the surgical staff, and they now have a better base for dealing with orthopaedic problems. They have also been able to use their skills to train surgeons from other Cambodian hospitals. Dr. Brown's commitment to teaching led him to sponsor one of the senior surgeons to give a presentation at an orthopaedic conference in the US, which allowed for connections to a much broader international medical community. "

Dr. Brown is the third SRS member to receive this prestigious award, following Dr. Michael O’Brien in 2008 and Dr. Isadore Lieberman in 2011.  To read more about the award or to learn more about Health Volunteers Overseas, visit
