Scoliosis Research Society (SRS)
An International Organization Dedicated to the Education, Research and Treatment of Spinal Deformity
Our Mission is to Foster Optimal Care for All Patients with Spinal Deformities
On Tuesday May 14, Professional golfer Ken Duke took time out of his day to visit scoliosis patients at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas, TX. To know that he would make this visit a priority when he was preparing for the 2013 HP Byron Nelson Golf Championship speaks to his character and commitment. At the age of 17, Mr. Duke underwent surgery to correct his scoliosis. To see someone who has walked the same road as they have, and has achieved his degree of success, meant a great deal to the patients. His visit was also a wonderful opportunity to enhance the public's awareness of scoliosis and patients with spinal deformity.
Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine that affects one out of every forty children and adults, or an estimated 7 million people in the United States. Approximately one out of every six children diagnosed will have a curve that progresses to the point where treatment will be needed. With early detection and proper treatment, people diagnosed with scoliosis can lead healthy, active lives, as evidenced by Mr. Duke. Much more can be learned about this condition from the Scoliosis Research Society at www.srs.org."
