Treatment
Recently, a new surgical technique termed "expansion thoracoplasties" with the vertical expandable prosthetic titanium rib (
VEPTR or "titanium rib") device, have been approved by the FDA to treat the combined thoracic deformity (spine/rib cage) by enlarging the constricted chest and straightening the spine indirectly without a spine fusion. Long-term follow-up studies of this technique are now underway.
