Since 2005 members of the Operation Straight Spine (OSS) team, consisting of spinal surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and neuromonitoring technicians from the US and UK, travel to Kolkata, India. Our mission work is based at the Ramakrishna Mission SEVA Prastisthan Charity Hospital. This is a full-service medical facility complete with dedicated Paediatric unit. It is a teaching institution as well, including orthopaedic residency and nursing school. During our annual two week mission trip we conduct screening and post-op clinics, perform surgery and teach local surgeons and orthopaedic residents about spinal diseases and surgical techniques. During our two week stay we typically perform 15-20 surgeries on paediatric and adult patients with a variety of spinal maladies. Conditions treated include scoliosis and other spinal deformities, spondylolisthesis, spinal stenosis, tuberculosis of the spine, traumatic fractures, and tumors of the spine. Patients are selected from the 15 million inhabitants of Kolkata and the surrounding areas of West Bengal Province.
