Opening Ceremonies & Welcome Reception
Wednesday, September 9, 2020
18:30-21:30

Open to all registered delegates and registered guests for no additional fee. Guests who are not registered for the meeting, but wish to attend the Opening Ceremonies & the Welcome Reception may purchase a name badge for $100. Name badges are required for entrance.

The Annual Meeting will officially begin with the Opening Ceremonies and this year’s Howard Steel Lecture, Navajo Code Talker and Former Leader of the Navajo Nation, Peter MacDonald, Sr. The evening will include an introduction of the SRS officers and the presentation of the Walter P. Blount Humanitarian Award. All delegates and registered guests are invited and encouraged to attend the Opening Ceremonies. Following the Opening Ceremonies, is a hosted reception featuring heavy hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, plenty of lively conversations, and reunions with colleagues and friends.

The Welcome Reception is supported, in part, by grants from Globus Medical, Inc., Medtronic, NuVasive, OrthoPediatrics, and Zimmer Biomet.

Farewell Reception

The 55th Annual Meeting will culminate with a ranch-style Reception at Desert Foothills. The reception will feature a desert setting, lawn games, beer burros, and live music. Tickets to the Farewell Reception are $50 for registered delegates and registered guests. Guests who are not registered for the meeting, but wish to attend the Farewell Reception may purchase a ticket for $175. Tickets must be purchased in advance of the reception. SRS urges delegates to purchase tickets in advance, at the time of registration, as a limited number of tickets may be available onsite. Casual attire is appropriate and encouraged for the Farewell Reception; including jeans and comfortable shoes.

The following tours are available to delegates and guests through Circa Destination Management. All tour reservations must be made online at the link below or by calling Pam Shumate of Circa Destination Management at 325-217-2746.

Please note, the deadline to register for tours is Friday, August 14, 2020; however, if the minimum of participants for a tour is not reached by July 10, 2020 the tour may be cancelled due to lack of participation. When registering for tours, your credit card will not be processed until the tour minimum is met. You will be sent a confirmation of your tour registration via email.

Southwest Story - Desert Botanical Gardens & Heard Museum

A cultural tour dedicated to celebrating the natural beauty and heritage of Arizona along with the history of the state. Your day begins at the Desert Botanical Gardens, where thousands of native plants and cacti flourish in their natural desert setting. The journey into Arizona’s past continues at the Heard Museum of Anthropology and Primitive Art, where hundreds of years of Southwestern history is showcased in its collections of Native American artifacts of special interest is the Kachina Doll Gallery, with a rare assortment of Hopi Kachina dolls, including those from the renowned collection of the late Senator Barry Goldwater. 10 person minimum.*

Off Road Desert Adventure

Take the ride of a lifetime into the beautiful Sonoran Desert! Your expert cowboy guide will pick you up at your hotel in an off road vehicle for a fun and informative journey into the wilds. Your driver will entertain you with stories of the Old West as you barrel past stately Saguaros and Ocotillos and other desert plants. Later, as you walk along in this unspoiled wilderness, your guide will demonstrate how the ancient Indians used desert plants for their everyday survival. 5 person minimum.*

Taliesin West

A listing of Frank Lloyd Wright’s greatest architectural achievements always includes his personal residence and architectural school, Taliesin West. Situated on 600 acres of the Sonoran Desert, Taliesin West is a National Historic Landmark that still serves as a living, working educational facility with an onsite architectural firm. Taliesin West was literally created out of the desert by Wright and his apprentices. They gathered rocks from the desert floor and sand from the washes to build this desert masterpiece. 15 person minimum.*

Horseback Trail Ride

We invite you to experience the West the way it’s meant to be seen, on horseback! The Sonoran Desert offers some of the most scenic riding trails in AZ within the serenity and natural beauty of the Tonto National Forest. Day of Culture - Heard Museum

Founded in 1929 by Dwight B and Marie Bartlett Heard, the internationally acclaimed Heard Museum is known for its extensive collections of Native American artifacts and fine art. Since then, the museum has grown to seven exhibit galleries containing more than 35,000 artifacts, plus a 24,000 volume reference library. Authentic Native American dwellings like the Navaho Hogan, Apache Wickiup, and a replica of an ancient pit house were built especially for these exhibits. Also of interest is the Kachina Doll Gallery, with a rare assortment of Hopi Kachina dolls. Native American artists demonstrate bead working, weaving and carving and there are many interactive ‘hands on’ activities. The museum stands as a testament to cultures lost and found a unique location where you can learn about the culture and art of the Native American peoples of the Southwest. 10 person minimum.*
