The Uganda Spine Surgery Mission exists to provide the best possible spine care to Ugandan patients afflicted by infectious, degenerative, traumatic, and congenital spinal ailments. The mission will strive to provide a fertile environment for the education of those who serve these patients by becoming a self-sustaining program, with a philanthropic base and a volunteer core. Isador Lieberman, MD (Plano, TX) pioneered the trip in 2006. The mission usually consists of rotating teams that spend about a week on the ground before the next group arrives. The team consists of local and SRS surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, students, and other volunteers. The teams typically perform 10-20 complex spine surgeries during their stay, and distribute medical equipment to patients in need.
