Scoliosis Research Society Announces the 2022 Research Grant Award Winners

 During the 57th Annual Meeting of the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS), held in Stockholm, Sweden, members announced the 2022 Research Grant Award Winners. The total for this year's funding is more than $300,000 dedicated to spine research. All  research grant applications are reviewed and selected by the SRS Research Grant Committee. Congratulations to the following grant winners.

New Investigator Grants:

Wing Hang Prudence Cheung for Can the Novel Proximal Femur Maturity Index (PFMI) Effectively Guide the Initiation of Brace treatment in Idiopathic Scoliosis? Totaling $29,998.

Susana Núñez-Pereira for Spinal Pathology in Patients with Marfan or Loeys-Dietz Syndrome. Risk factors for Severity and Progression totaling $29,700.

Standard Grants:

Eric Parent for The Effect of Arm Positions Used During Radiography on Frontal and Sagittal Parameters in Healthy and Adolescent Scoliosis Populations totaling $42,733.85.

J. Paige Little for Enhanced Care Delivery and Patient Experiences for Kids with Scoliosis: Smart Digital Strategies to Link Patients and Care Services totaling $25,144.

Carl-Éric Aubin for Improving Surgical Outcomes of Lumbar Vertebral Body Tethering: A Comprehensive Biomechanical Evaluation of Patient-Specific and Surgical Parameters totaling $75,000.

Resident/Fellow Grants:

Kenneth Shaw for Examining HRQoL at 3-5 Years Postop in Early Onset Scoliosis: What are Effects of Complications and Instrumentation Choice Accounting for C-EOS Classification totaling $9,000.

Christopher McDonald for The Use of Variable Pressure Technology to Increase Compliance and Efficacy of the Providence Brace in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis totaling $8,000.

Ryan Finkel for Impact of Lumbosacral Anatomy and L5 Morphology on the Incidence of Pediatric Spondylolysis totaling $10,000.

Exploratory Mirco Grant:

Eren Kuris for Prevention of Proximal Junctional Kyphosis with Bilateral Suture Anchor Pedicular Fixation in the UIV + 1 totaling $2,500.

Earlier this year, SRS also awarded Directed Research Grant Award Winner Javier Pizones, MD, PhD, for his study, Self-Perceived Health Status and Healthcare Consumption of Idiopathic Scoliosis Patients Treated More Than 20 Years Ago which received $450,000 in grant funding. With that award, the SRS has given a total of more than $700,000 in grants to further research in just 2022 alone.

“SRS has awarded 200 grants totaling more than $6.5 million since we started the grant program in 1994 – all focused on research in spinal deformity,” said Doug Burton, MD, chair of the SRS Research Council. “This is the realization of the SRS mission to foster the optimal care of all patients with spinal deformities. Our member’s research and the research we support, has set the pace for innovation and inspiration in this industry worldwide.”
